Catskill Region Hotels and Lodges Go Green, Completing a Rigorous Eco-Business Certification Program

Catskills, NY (PRWEB) December 12, 2011

Eighteen lodging establishments that have recently received the Green Concierge© Bronze certification will be honored at a reception on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Longhouse Lodge at Belleayre Mountain. The program, which is administered by environmental consulting firm HospitalityGreen LLC, trains and assesses lodging facilities to ensure they meet standards for waste reduction, energy and water conservation, environmentally preferable purchasing and recycling.

The newly certified facilities span Delaware, Greene, Sullivan and Ulster Counties in New York State and represent the full spectrum of lodging available in the Catskills, including resort hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, farm stays, and retreat centers. The list of certified properties includes:

Christman’s Windam House

Creek Locks Bed and Breakfast

Frost Valley YMCA

Hotel Vienna

The Stonehouse Bed and Breakfast

Kaatskill Mountain Club

La Basse Cour

Lifebridge Sanctuary

Margaretville Motel

Margaretville Mountain Inn

Menla Mountain Retreat

Pepacton Cabins

Phoenicia Lodge

Rosehaven Inn

Skylake Lodge

The Thompson House

Turquoise Barn

Twin Gables

Washington Irving Inn

Each facility has made both small and large changes to make their business sustainable and more cost-efficient. This includes using energy efficient light bulbs, recycling, composting, using non-toxic cleaning products, upgrading sinks, showerheads and toilets to water-conserving models, purchasing recycled-content paper products, and sourcing local produce whenever possible. A Resource Tracking Tool (RTT) helped them track measurable environmental improvements and target opportunities for reducing costs.

Evadne Giannini, Founder and CEO of HospitalityGreen LLC, said “We have been working with these facilities since late 2010, and it’s wonderful to see how far they have come. They have been so dedicated to the program and now that they are officially certified, we hope to see the Catskills flourish as an eco-tourist destination.”

Select facilities will continue with the program to reach subsequent tiers (Silver and then Gold certification), implementing and tracking increasingly rigorous sustainable practices. Ten additional lodgings are currently participating in the Green Concierge© program as well with the goal of reaching Bronze certification within the next year.

In addition to the certification program, the Green Concierge Project, through funding from the Empire State Development (ESD) and the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC), provides free one-on-one technical assistance to over 150 tourism and lodging facilities in the Catskill Watershed Region to improve their operational economic and environmental sustainability practices. The GC Certification is recognized and ranked by Greenlodge.org as a Silver Tier Program, placing it within an elite group of national and international third party certification programs.
