How are bacteria much more metabolically diverse than eukaryotes?

Early bacteria were/are photosynthetic and created the oxygen rich atmosphere that the Earth has. Eukaryotes are more modern organisms and most are adapted to breathe oxygen and perform cellular respiration on sugars. However prokaryotes are more archaic organisms and are much more likely to have a unique form of getting energy, from chemicals, radiation etc…
