If The Oil Runs Out : 3 of 6

The demand for energy has risen relentlessly over the last 150 years in line with industrial development and population growth. And as economies of developing countries like China and India continue to grow, it is predicted demand will rise by a further 50% by 2030. President Bush has already warned the United States that it is too reliant on oil, often from “unstable” countries, and that it must find alternatives. Geologists are searching in Arctic Alaska, around the Falkland Islands and under the oceans for the last remaining sizeable reserves of oil. But what will happen if the fuel crisis is not resolved? ____________________ Blending drama and documentary, the IF series returns with a film investigating a scenario many experts fear will come true. When the cheap oil we depend on starts to run out, we may not be able to take anything for granted any more. DRAMA ______ It is 2016 and the world is in crisis. Global supplies of oil cannot keep up with soaring demand and the price of petrol is going through the roof. The oil companies are in a desperate race to find any remaining oil reserves but what happens if there is no more out there? Combining expert interviews with a fictional story line, the drama-documentary examines how our lives will change as the price of fuel starts to spiral out of control. The film interweaves the story of Jess, an exploration geologist working for an international oil company, with the impact of the fuel crisis on her parents back home in

OEAS Endorses New Economic Policy for Africa

OEAS Endorses New Economic Policy for Africa

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 05, 2012

The Organization of Emerging Africa States (OEAS) representing independence movements in Biafra, Cabinda, Southern Cameroons, Mthwakazi (Zimbabwe), Lunda (Angola), Dagora (Burkino Faso), Vahvenda (South Africa), and the French Indian Ocean territories (UMMOA) has expressed its support for economic self determination initiatives by its member states. In November 2012 oil and mineral agreements between a Canadian company, Kilimanjaro Capital Ltd, and Southern Cameroons and Cabinda as reported November 24, 2012 by industry source Oil Review Africa.

Ebenezer Akwanga, OEAS Secretary General since 2010, National Chairman of the Southern Cameroons Youth League (SCYL) is a leading member of the Southern Cameroons Government which seeks the total independence of that country. In 1997, Akwanga was first arrested by the government of Cameroun for advocating independence for Southern Cameroons and sentenced in a mass trial of independence advocates to 20 years in jail. During his detention he was repeatedly tortured, beaten and denied proper medical care according to the international human rights organization REDRESS.

In 2003, Akwanga escaped prison to Nigeria where he was granted protection by the United Nations. Akwanga has narrowly escaped multiple attempts on his life since then. In 2011 the UN Human Rights Commission found that Akwanga’s human rights had been violated by Cameroun government and that he was owed compensation. Ebenezer Derek Mbongo Akwanga v.Cameroon, UN Human Rights Council, Communication No. 1813/2008.

Akwanga was also instrumental in recent negotiations leading up to funding by Kilimanjaro Capital for the Southern Cameroon’s government. During these negotiations gunmen attacked Akwanga’s residence in South Africa on behalf of a state party, according to a November 12, 2012 letter by the South African National Prosecuting Authority to Akwanga’s lawyer (Case No. 9/2/12-512/2012), the matter has been referred to the Chief Prosecutor in KwaZulu-Natal.

Cabinda and Southern Cameroons join the independence movement in Western Sahara as aspiring African states that have signed future resource development deals with the private sector. This is a trend which may eventually result in numerous new African nations joining the United Nations.

Epilepsy California Honors Senator Bob Huff at ?Love Your Brain Now? Exhibit at Capitol Steps

Epilepsy California Honors Senator Bob Huff at “Love Your Brain Now” Exhibit at Capitol Steps

Senator Bob Huff poses with fellow advocates, including students Cameron Kurtz and Christopher Web, in front of the “Love Your Brain Now” exhibit

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) December 05, 2012

The “Love Your Brain Now” Bus Tour traveled to Sacramento to park a 20’ x 15’ interactive, inflatable “Big Brain” near the South Steps of the State Capitol on Monday, December 3rd, as part of a pop-up exhibit delivering messages about the importance of protecting and caring for the brain.

With the “Big Brain” as the backdrop, Epilepsy California presented Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) with an award to honor his role as author of Senate Bill 161 and acknowledge his courage in protecting our most vulnerable children with epilepsy. Despite heavy opposition, SB 161 passed to authorize trained, unlicensed personnel to administer a life-saving emergency seizure rescue medication to students with epilepsy in California schools.

“I am deeply honored to receive recognition from such an admirable organization as the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and their statewide advocacy network, Epilepsy California,” said Senator Huff. “Working with Epilepsy California to protect students in public schools really was a labor of love.”

Joining in the awards ceremony were epilepsy advocates, families and representatives from Epilepsy California, Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. Advocates spent the day greeting new legislators to deliver information about epilepsy, personally thanking Senators and Assemblymembers for voting in support of SB 161 and also welcoming legislative staff and members of the public to the brain exhibit.

“The passage of the bill represented major progress for our children and we thank Senator Huff for his leadership.” said Neva Hirschkorn, a parent advocate with Epilepsy California.

The “Love Your Brain Now” Bus Tour launched in Los Angeles on October 28, 2012 and has since traveled throughout California to educate students and the public-at-large about ways to prevent brain trauma and seizures, while sharing ways for those with epilepsy to reduce seizures, and for everyone to learn seizure first aid.

“The Sacramento Tour stop was also a wonderful opportunity for Epilepsy California advocates to visit new and returning legislators and distribute information about epilepsy and Epilepsy California, and to meet with representatives of the California School Nurses Organization so that together we can ensure consistent and quality implementation of the bill statewide.” said Ann Kinkor, statewide advocacy coordinator for Epilepsy California.

ABOUT EPILEPSY

Without warning, seizures can happen to anyone at any age. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they have epilepsy. Seizures do not all look the same and, according to the International League Against Epilepsy, there are currently more than 25 different recognized epilepsy syndromes affecting almost 3 million people in the U.S. and about 65 million people worldwide. Someone is diagnosed with epilepsy every four minutes and, this year alone, almost 200,000 people in our country will be diagnosed. To date, there are no known cures.

ABOUT EPILEPSY CALIFORNIA

Epilepsy California is the recognized, unified voice of people with epilepsy throughout California, and its members currently consist of the Epilepsy Foundations of San Diego County and the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. We are pro-active in developing a statewide epilepsy agenda, and advocate within state government and state agencies for public policy which ensures the rights of people affected by epilepsy to fully participate as contributing members of their communities. Epilepsy California represents about 300,000 families affected by epilepsy in California. Visit http://www.EpilepsyCalifornia.org for more information.
