Nice International Development Policy photos

A few nice International development policy images I found:

International development policy

On 1 March 2011 Embassy of Embassy of Canada to Poland and the Polish Institute of International Affairs organized a conference devoted to Arctic region.
“This half-day conference brought together Polish and Canadian Arctic experts and decision
makers to support and consider the emerging discussion in Poland on this important region.

Poland has been a distinguished member of the Arctic research community and a prominent
Observer State of the Arctic Council since its inception. While to Canadians the Arctic is home,
and to Polish researchers it is a challenging but familiar workplace, to much of the international
community and indeed Polish society it remains relatively unknown or misunderstood. Far from
being a ‘wild west’ frontier as it is sometimes portrayed, the Arctic is a well-governed and
thriving homeland to numerous indigenous communities with enormous development potential.

Canada’s vision for the Arctic is that of a stable region with clearly defined boundaries, dynamic
economic growth and trade, vibrant Northern communities, and healthy and productive
ecosystems. The Arctic Council is for Canada the well-established and principal forum for
international cooperation in these areas. Poland’s vision of the Arctic is similar, as an observer
in the Arctic Council, which convenes and supports sustained dialogue and cooperation.

Canada, like Poland, has made a strong commitment to Arctic science—the foundation for sound
policy- and decision-making on the environment. Canada was the single largest financial
contributor to International Polar Year research activities and has announced the construction
of a state of the art international High Arctic research facility in Cambridge Bay, and Poland
maintains a world-class scientific research base in Spitsbergen. New opportunities and
challenges are emerging across the Arctic, in part as a result of climate change and the pursuit
of resources. While this may well support social and economic development, it may also bring
new environmental threats, search and rescue incidents, civil emergencies and, potentially
even illegal activity*”.

Public Power Systems Improve Emissions Profiles: Substantial Declines in Carbon and Other Emissions and Intensity Rates

Public Power Systems Improve Emissions Profiles: Substantial Declines in Carbon and Other Emissions and Intensity Rates

Hauppauge, N.Y. (PRWEB) May 29, 2012

Target Rock Advisors, LLC today released the results of an analysis of trends in emissions produced by public power systems, including municipal systems and state and federal power agencies.

“Overall, the public power systems made significant progress in reducing their total emissions as well as the rates at which they produce emissions,” said Kyle Rudden, co-founder and partner at Target Rock. The study measured both the change in total tons of emissions and the rates (expressed in tons per MMbtu of electricity generated) that occurred over the last ten years in each of three emissions categories: carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. It also took a look at the same statistics for the last five years.

“The speed with which the public power systems reduced their emission rates in the last five years as compared to the first five years of the ten year analysis was remarkable,” stated Mr. Rudden. “Clearly, public power systems have made great strides since 2001 in fuel selection, generating technology and emissions control and in other operational and planning policies and practices. This has helped them reach new levels of sustainable performance.”

For the 193 public power systems analyzed the greatest reductions in total emissions for the ten year period 12/31/01-12/31/11 were in NOx and SO2, which were down 57.8% and 55.6% respectively over the last ten years. Additionally, NOx and SO2 emissions intensity rates fell 59.3% and 57.1%. Total CO2 emissions also declined but at a more modest rate of 2.4%. It is important to note that the public power sector achieved this 2.4% CO2 reduction despite a 9.4% increase in net generation over the period. Much of that reduction is attributable to a shift away from coal to cleaner fuels, but public power also delivered significant improvements in CO2 emissions intensity rates; down 3.7% over the ten year period. In many of these areas improvements have accelerated more recently, with even greater annual percentage declines in the five-year period 12/31/06-12/31/11.

Target Rock’s focus on sustainability assessment and ranking has, until now, related to the investor owned utility sector. The investor owned rankings – which addressed many more sustainability factors than just emissions – were released in February of this year. This new study represents an initial step in developing similar assessment methodologies and metrics for the public power sector.

“While there are a number of institutional and financial differences between the public and investor owned systems, there are far more similarities, not the least of which is the need to improve sustainability performance across the full range of “triple bottom line” considerations: Economic, Environmental and Social,” continued Mr. Rudden. “A fair amount of attention has been paid to how investor owned utilities perform financially as their sustainability practices improve, but not much has been said about public power systems. Through this study and subsequent ones, we hope to make a significant contribution to sustainability analytics in this sector.”

So I thought I would kick off my (slowly) on-going series, Metro Montreal, documenting Montreal’s wonderful subway system. The images from this series will in turn be part of a larger project called Public Goods. This one was taken last March on a day of zipping down the green line with my friend Megan.

2. The English Enclosures

The devastating enclosures of the English commons forced peasants into the labor market and the factories of the industrial revolution. This video explains how and why. The next video in the series, The Invention of the Author, explains how the romantic movement was influenced by the enclosures. This is a follow-up to my Tragedy of the Commons video. Q&A: What do you think will be the challenges facing the American Foreign Service in the 21st Century?

Question by Stardust Hopes: What do you think will be the challenges facing the American Foreign Service in the 21st Century?
What are some international issues that are an example of this?

Choose one or several specific international issues that you think will be major challenges to the American Foreign Service in carrying out a successful U.S. foreign policy in the new century, and explain why you have chosen these issues.

What is the role of members of the United States Foreign Service in conducting diplomacy to resolve one or more of these particular issues and discuss the immediate consequences.

Keep in mind the United States national interests include, among other issues: national security, countering terrorism, protection of American citizens, human rights, democratization, free market economics, free trade, and sustainable economic development.

-PLEASE help me come up with ideas and things to help me figure out what to write! Much appreciation to those who help me and thanks in advance. 🙂

Answer by The Truth Seeker
Humility- for a nation to have an arrogant self-righteous attitude is the worst thing. More listening, less telling.

Look at the White Man’s Burden by Rudyard Kipling. It is imperative that US has a major mind-set shift away from that type of thinking towards a more concilatory approach.

Africa is already in Chinese hands. US’s unquestioning support for Israel. Troublesome relations with South American countries does not bode well.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports On Status Of Federal Merck Fosamax Litigation

Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports On Status Of Federal Merck Fosamax Litigation

New York, New York (PRWEB) June 01, 2012

Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who sustained Fosamax femur fractures as a result of taking the widely prescribed osteoporotic drug, reports that a new Case Management Order was recently issued in In re: Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium) Products Liability Litigation (No. II) (MDL No. 2243 Civ. No. 08-08 (JAP-LHG).* The Order, issued by the Honorable Joel A. Pisano, who is overseeing the federal Merck Fosamax litigation concerning femur fractures, currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, involves the exchange of evidence between the parties. Specifically, it sets forth procedures for the exchange and production of paper documents and electronically stored information and serves to expedite the discovery phase of the Merck Fosamax litigation.

Specific Provisions Of The Merck Fosamax Litigation Order

The purpose of this type of discovery order is to eliminate confusion and facilitate the efficient and cost-effective production of documents relevant to the Merck Fosamax litigation. The Order is clear that this protocol applies to all cases in the federal Fosamax femur fracture multidistrict litigation. Furthermore, the Order addresses how Merck should handle requests that would require the production of privileged information or trade secrets. Finally, the Order addresses technical issues such as how documents will be identified and in what format they will be delivered.

Status of Related Federal Merck Fosamax Lawsuits

In addition to the femur fracture lawsuits pending before Judge Pisano, there is also a multidistrict litigation currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District Court of New York before the Honorable John F. Keenan. Plaintiffs with lawsuits pending in the consolidated litigation, In re Fosamax Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 1789”), allege that Fosamax caused them to develop osteonecrosis of the jaw (“ONJ”). Although a handful of the ONJ cases have gone to trial, the femur fracture cases are still in the pre-trial discovery phase of the litigation.

The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are currently representing clients and actively filing cases on behalf of individuals who were allegedly injured as a result of taking Fosamax. Those who took Fosamax and sustained a femur fracture may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other injuries. Learn more by watching this Fosamax femur fracture video, which details the events leading up to the Merck Fosamax litigation, or visit our website, http://www.consumerinjurylawyers.com.

Career Change from Electronics to Environmental Engineering?

Question by mars3015: Career Change from Electronics to Environmental Engineering?

After 10 years in high tech (microelectronics) engineering I am considering moving to Environmental Engineering Sciences.
I am very passionate about this area and do a lot of volunteering and so on.

I am now 33, not married. Do you think this kind of change is advisable, and what are my job prospects, it would take about 1.5 years.

Best answer:

Answer by Stamatios D
Anything you are passionate about is worth pursuing as you will enjoy what you’ll be doing, be good at it, and therefore be successful, even at this stage of your life.
Microelectronics was the flavor of the month in the 80s and 90s, but I am not so sure now, as the industry is now limited to a few giant companies and the average company finds it very hard to invest the capital for CAE and undertake a huge risk (NRE costs).
On the other hand, everyone is worried about the environment, so perhaps there are better job prospects there.
Good luck with your decision!
